Civil Service Title Student Behavioral Consultant

Minimum Requirements

Master's Degree from accredited college in Special Education, School Psychology, Speech-Language Pathology or closely related field and Certified in NYS to practice in a school setting required.

A minimum of five years of experience working with students with disabilities, particularly behavioral challenges.

Training and experience in Applied Behavioral Analysis; Board Certification (BCBA) or willing to pursue (BCBA must be completed within four years).

Experience in writing and implementing FBA/BIPs.

Ability to work with school and district administrators, teachers, related service providers, support staff, students, and families.

Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation).

OR

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, Social Work or any psychology, counseling, or education field plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience working with individuals with behavioral challenges, development disabilities, psychological disorders, or mental health issues in a structured environment; OR,

(B) Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Behavioral Analyst issued by the New York State Office of the Professions plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience working with individuals with behavioral challenges, development disabilities, psychological disorders, or mental health issues in a structured environment*.

Desired Qualifications

Working knowledge of Federal and State Special Education policies and procedures.

Knowledge of New York State Standards.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Position Summary/Responsibilities

Provide consultation and training for staff (administrators, teachers, related service providers, support staff) to build capacity around function-based thinking.

Coordination and facilitation of FBA/BIP development and review, including documentation, collection and analysis of behavioral data, and providing feedback to staff related to the FBA/BIP process.

Conduct behavioral and social assessments of students.

Provide consultation and support to the families of students.

Participate in and present at a variety of meetings as appropriate (CSE, staff, PLC, etc.).

Provide training to professional and non-professional staff related to best practices for students with a variety of disabilities.

Provide crisis support or direction to school teams and families as needed.

Establish positive rapport with students, school staff, and parents/guardians.

Stay current with certifications and research in the field.

Work closely with administration and classroom instructional leaders.

Effectively communicate among home, school staff, districts, and community support agencies.
