Speech and Language Pathologist Job Description The role supports the educational process by identifying students with communication disabilities, planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on student success, recommending educational therapeutic support plans, and providing direction to the Speech Language Pathologist Assistant.
Reporting This job reports to Assigned Administrator.
Essential Functions Assesses students' communication skills (articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc.) to identify communication disorders, determine eligibility, and develop recommendations for services.
Collaborates with parents, teachers, physicians, administration, maintenance personnel, team members, and other professionals to communicate information, resolve issues, and provide services in compliance with established guidelines.
Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students (testing/screening, IEPs, parent conferences, pre-referral staffing, etc.) to present evaluation results, therapy/support plans, and/or provide training to parents, students, and staff.
Develops service plans, interventions, and educational materials to minimize the adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Instructs eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies (augmentative communication devices, etc.) to minimize the educational impact of communication disorders per guidelines and legal requirements.
Interprets medical reports within scope of practice and goals to provide information and ensure treatment/intervention plans are appropriate.
Maintains files and records (progress reports, activity logs, billing information, therapy plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for reference and compliance.
Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (training, IEPs, team meetings, etc.) to convey and gather information.
Performs site visits at multiple work locations, including home visits and private day, to provide therapy and assistance as required.
Prepares written materials (activity logs, correspondence, memos, treatment plans, Medicaid billings, reports, required documentation, etc.) to document activities, provide written reference, and convey information.
Provides speech and language therapy to students to minimize the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on success.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Skills: apply assessment instruments; operate specialized equipment used for treatment of communication disorders; operate standard office equipment including pertinent computer software; prepare and maintain accurate records.
Knowledge: algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information; write technical materials; speak persuasively; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge: anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms and disorders; principles and practices of speech and language therapy; ASHA guidelines, and pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws.
Abilities: schedule activities, meetings, events; gather, collate, classify data; use job-related equipment; work flexibly with others in varied circumstances; handle data of varied types and purposes; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; work as part of a team; translate therapy data into meaningful educational activities.
Responsibilities: work under limited supervision using standardized practices; lead, guide, coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; utilize resources from other work units; impact organization’s services.
Work Environment: physical demands include some lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and fine finger dexterity. Generally 33% sitting, 33% walking, 34% standing. Exposure to risk of injury/illness.
Experience: specialized field experience is required.
Education: Masters degree in relevant area.
Equivalency: testing certificates and licenses, Arizona teaching credentials.
Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned for efficient functioning of the work unit.
Continuing Education / Training Clearances Maintains certificates and/or licenses; criminal background clearance/fingerprint clearance; MMR.
