Responsibilities Summary This position is accountable for providing instruction and other educational supports such as case management to special‑needs students and assisting them in their academic and social development.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:• Valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement(s) appropriate to the teaching assignment. • Comprehensive Special Education, K‑12 – 165 endorsement. • Current Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License (may be required).

Continuing Education:• Completion of all State CEU requirements for re‑certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:• Current best practices, laws (including due process and IDEA), and intervention strategies for special‑needs students. • Knowledge of specific disabilities, child development, educational philosophy, and research‑based strategies. • Knowledge of educational testing, learning theory, and student learning styles (academic and affective).• Knowledge of PBIS and SRBI. • Skill in accommodations for visual impairments (including Braille), use of assistive technology, classroom and behavior management, interpersonal relations, organization, communication, and use of computer technology for instructional purposes. • Ability to create a structured, efficient working environment, develop curriculum, lesson plans, assessment tools, and incorporate assessment results.• Ability to teach students with varying disabilities in a variety of classes, and to apply flexible and individualized interventions.

Essential Functions

Attend staff, building, parent, team, and case‑management meetings.

Communicate and provide consultation with team members, parents/guardians, and external agencies regarding students, interventions, medications, and programmatic needs.

Develop data‑collection and management systems; analyze data and recommend individualized instructional plans.

Create and use assessment tools and progress reports, including the Illinois Interactive report cards.

Build positive, trusting relationships with students; provide counseling, transition planning, and job coaching for community placement.

Develop, adapt, and implement curriculum and lesson plans aligned with academic standards.

Ensure teams use least restrictive environment principles and best practices.

Assist with transportation issues and student safety on school buses and in the building.

Participate in staff development activities.

Provide direct instruction using individualized instruction, lectures, team teaching, hands‑on formats, etc.

Manage student behavior, implement disciplinary procedures, develop individualized intervention plans, and model strategies for staff.

Provide safety oversight during extreme weather, transportation, or other emergencies.

Work with IEP teams on IEP development, management, reevaluation, goal writing, and conference participation.

Order supplies and materials related to curriculum and instruction.

Provide in‑service training to staff, serve as case manager for transition planning, and work with hearing‑impaired students on an itinerant basis.

Perform related duties as required.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands Employees must possess adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and maintain such fitness to perform the duties of this class. A physical examination may be required.
