Responsibilities The role involves the following core activities:
Design and conduct controlled test explosions in the BedrettoLab and evaluate seismic sensors, including distributed acoustic sensing technology.
Define optimal sensor geometry, participate in the installation of a multi‑sensor monitoring network in the Hondrich underground test facilities, calibrate velocity models using controlled events and ensure data acquisition quality control.
Integrate multi‑sensor data streams into seismological software frameworks (e.g., SeisComP), perform wave‑propagation modeling in complex 3‑D geometries, develop and optimize event‑detection algorithms, high‑precision localization methods, event magnitude estimation, source‑characterization techniques, and contribute to real‑time alarm system implementation.
Optimize cost‑effective alarm systems through sensor‑layout reduction, develop user‑friendly monitoring concepts for future underground facilities, and collaborate closely with engineering companies, the Swiss Armed Forces, armasuisse, and international partners to support efficient roll‑out.
Qualifications
MSc degree in Geophysics, Seismology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
Strong quantitative and analytical skills with programming experience in Python; prior experience with seismic data processing is advantageous.
Basic experience in seismic data analysis and/or wave‑propagation modeling is an asset.
Willingness to participate in field campaigns in underground facilities.
Interest in field experiments and applied research.
Practical and efficient mindset for project implementation.
Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary, practice‑oriented environment.
Benefits
Fully funded PhD position for up to 4 years.
Employment according to ETH Zurich regulations.
Access to the Bedretto Underground Laboratory.
Collaborative environment bridging research, field experiments, and real‑world applications.
Opportunities for publications and international conference participation.
Strong communication skills ideally in German and English.
Workplace The candidate will be supervised by senior scientists at the Swiss Seismological Service, ETH Zurich, and will work within a multidisciplinary project consortium including public authorities and industry partners.
