The Professorship of Construction Heritage and Preservation is currently searching for a postdoctoral researcher to start in September 2026 or upon agreement.

Project background The Professorship of Construction Heritage and Preservation engages with theoretical and practical challenges of collecting, assessing, and preserving monuments. It is affiliated with the Institute for Preservation and Construction History (IDB) and the Institute for Technology in Architecture (ITA).

Knowledge of traditional construction methods, materials, architectural design principles and building processes is essential for responsible handling of historic buildings. Understanding newer construction processes and materials is also increasingly important for the future building stock. Research focuses on diverse building stocks, their value as monuments, and conservation challenges, with a special interest in Switzerland’s engineering works and newly developed construction methods.

Job description

Formulate and write proposals for research grant applications (e.g., SNF, Innosuisse, EU Horizon).

Contribute to ongoing research projects, including scientific publication efforts.

Co‑lead publication projects.

Support teaching activities, including core seminars and continuing education programmes.

Assist in supervising doctoral researchers.

Take on short- and medium-term projects within the Competence Center for Preservation at IDB.

Profile

Master's degree and PhD in architecture, civil engineering, art history, technology history, or related fields.

Experience applying for and successfully obtaining third‑party research funding.

Knowledge of Swiss and international architectural heritage and building cultures is an asset.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English.
